These fairy cakes are decorated to look like the St. George's cross.

St. George's cross is also the flag for England so these cakes are perfect to make as a half time treat to show support for the England football team!

This recipe makes 12 cakes

 

 

Ingredients

100g (4 oz) soft margarine
100g (4 oz) caster sugar
1 teaspoon pure vanilla essence
2 eggs
75ml (2 1/2 fl oz) milk
150g (5oz) plain flour
1 teaspoon baking power
1/2 teaspoon salt

For the topping

Icing sugar
Strawberry Laces

Step 1.

Pre-heat the oven to 180°C/350°F/Gas 4.

Put all the ingredients for the cakes into a bowl or food processor and beat together until smooth.

 

 

Step 2.

Spoon into 12 paper cases and place on a baking tray. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes or until well risen and the sponge springs back when you press with your fingertips.

Remember to ask an adult for help when using the oven!

Step 3.

When the cakes have cooled, mix the icing sugar together with a little water until it thickens and becomes smooth.

Spoon the Icing over the cakes, covering the whole of the cake.

Step 4.

Cut the strawberry laces into small strips and lay them across the cakes in a cross shape. You may need to use more than one lace side by side.

Let the icing set before serving to your friends and family.
