Follow these instructions to make a clay hanukkiya ready to light at Hanukkah.

You will need:
*Self-hardening clay
*Ruler
*Butter knife
*Candles
*Sturdy cardboard or wood
*Acrylic paint and brushes

On a clean work surface, roll the clay into a long cylinder with an even diameter of about 3cm.

Measure the cylinder and mark off 10 even lengths. Cut eight of these lengths, and leave the last two uncut (these will be the taller piece in the middle). The cylinders might flatten when cut so gently reshape them if necessary.

Using the candle, make a hole in one end of each cylinder, deep enough to hold it. If the cylinders squash, reshape gently.

On the cardboard or wooden base, line up the cylinders side by side, with the larger piece in the center.

Gently press the sides of the cylinders together, using water to make them stick (some separation may occur when the hanukkiah dries).

decorate your hanukkiya with clay shapes, using water to make the clay stick then leave it to dry overnight.

When the clay is dry paint the hanukkiya using brightly coloured paint.

SAFETY

Always ask an adult to help light the candles.

Once the candles are lit, keep them out of the reach of young children and do not leave them burning unless there is an adult in the room.
