Target audience: Key Stage 2

The fundamental aim of the Buster Anger Management Resource is to teach anger management in a format that is accessible to all. It has been developed over several years and has been trialled extensively in primary schools in Kirklees.

The resource is based around the story of Buster, who learns how to control his anger, and is told against the topical backdrop of his problems on the football field. The main theme of the story is centred around the interaction between Buster and his football coach. The latter becomes his mentor and 'coaches' him in anger management. The story is accompanied by a pupil workbook and teacher's notes.

The Buster resource has been through two pilot phases. The final pilot, involving 31 schools, confirmed its success in powerful terms:

94% of children felt that they understood more about anger. As to whether this knowledge would help them stay in control in the event of their getting angry, 86% rated their ability at the upper end of a 10 point scale, with nearly half of those rating their prospects of self control at 10.

Buster has been written by Ernie Shackleton of the Claremont Behaviour Support Service, Kirklees, in Partnership with Kid Premiership, who have undertaken the creative design responsibilities and Saied Laher, Community Partnership Manager for Kirklees Council.
